GKS Timeline: Month-by-Month Application Schedule

"I thought I had time, but the embassy deadline was already closed."

If this is your fear, you are not alone. For many students, the hardest part of GKS is not only writing the application. It is understanding the timeline before one missed date costs a whole year.

GoKorea Study is not an agency. We do not place students, take commission, or sell visas. This guide is free information in simple English, based on the 2026 GKS-U guidelines published by NIIED. GKS rules change every year, so always verify the newest notice on the official Study in Korea website: studyinkorea.go.kr.

This article is information only. It is not legal or immigration advice. For visa rules, immigration documents, country-specific embassy rules, and university-specific instructions, confirm with Korean immigration, your Korean embassy, your university, or the official notice for your country.

The Short Answer

For the 2026 GKS-U round, the main GKS timeline starts in September 2025 and ends with the final scholar announcement expected on Friday, January 9, 2026.

The online application opens on Monday, September 15, 2025 at 11:00 KST for both tracks.

The Embassy Track application deadline is Tuesday, September 30, 2025 at 18:00 KST.

The University Track application deadline is Friday, October 31, 2025 at 18:00 KST.

Expected-graduation applicants have one extra deadline to watch carefully. If you pass the first round, you must submit the final graduation certificate and transcript by December 31, 2025. If you do not, your acceptance is cancelled.

All times in this article are KST. Embassy and university first-round schedules may be different by country or school, so check the official notice every time.

This timeline is based on the 2026 GKS-U application guidelines published by NIIED. Use it as a planning map, not as the final authority. Before submitting, check:

  • The newest GKS notice on Study in Korea (studyinkorea.go.kr)
  • Your Korean embassy or consulate notice
  • Your target university notice
  • The Study in Korea online system instructions

If those sources disagree, follow the official notice for your year, country, track, and university.

September: The Application Opens

For 2026 GKS-U, the official guidelines are announced in September 2025. This is also when embassies and universities announce their own first-round schedules.

NIIED gives the main GKS timeline, but your embassy or university may have local instructions. Some embassies may have extra document rules, local submission steps, or earlier internal schedules.

The online application opens on Monday, September 15, 2025 at 11:00 KST.

By the time the system opens, you should already know your track, program, target universities, and document status.

September Deadline: Embassy Track

The Embassy Track deadline for 2026 GKS-U is Tuesday, September 30, 2025 at 18:00 KST.

Embassy Track means you apply through the Korean embassy in your country. For 2026 GKS-U, Embassy Track applicants can choose up to three universities. General and Overseas Korean applicants must include at least one Type B university. R-GKS applicants can choose up to two universities, from Type B only.

Embassy Track has three rounds:

  • First round by the embassy
  • Second round by NIIED
  • Third round by the universities you chose

This track can be attractive because you may choose more than one university. But the deadline is earlier. If your documents are not ready by the end of September, you may miss it.

October: Embassy Results and University Track Deadline

The Embassy Track first-round results are scheduled for Friday, October 17, 2025.

This date matters because the University Track deadline is later: Friday, October 31, 2025 at 18:00 KST.

The 2026 GKS-U guidelines say the University Track schedule was adjusted so unsuccessful first-round Embassy Track applicants can apply again.

But the window is short. From October 17 to October 31, there is not much time. If you want this fallback option, prepare University Track documents and university choices before the Embassy Track result comes out.

University Track means you apply directly to one Korean university through the online system. For 2026 GKS-U, University Track applicants choose one university and one department only.

University Track has two rounds:

  • First round by the university
  • Second round by NIIED

For University Track, the second-round result is final.

November: Second-Round Review Starts

For Embassy Track, second-round results by NIIED are announced within November 2025.

For University Track, first-round results are scheduled for Friday, November 14, 2025 at 18:00 KST. Then the university sends recommended candidates' documents to NIIED by Friday, November 28, 2025.

NIIED does not contact applicants individually for each round. You must check studyinkorea.go.kr notices and My Page yourself.

Do not wait only for an email or social media update. Your responsibility is to check the official system and official notices.

December: Final University Track Results and Embassy Third Round

Within December 2025, University Track second-round results are announced. This is final for University Track, and the result is announced mid-December.

Embassy Track applicants still have one more step. Their third-round results are scheduled for Friday, December 26, 2025 at 18:00 KST. This is the university review by the three universities chosen in the Embassy Track application.

If you applied as an expected graduate and passed the first round, you must submit the final graduation certificate and transcript by December 31, 2025. If you miss this deadline, your acceptance is cancelled.

This can create a serious academic-calendar conflict. If your school cannot issue final graduation proof by December 31, 2025, check the official notice before you apply.

January: Final Selection

For Embassy Track applicants, Friday, January 2, 2026 at 18:00 KST is the deadline to log in and select the final university.

The final announcement of 2026 GKS-U scholars is expected on Friday, January 9, 2026.

After that, selected scholars prepare for visa, Standard Admission Letter documents, and travel. The timeline source lists February-August 2026 for visa, apostilled certificates for the Standard Admission Letter, and travel preparation.

The Korean language program year starts around March or September 2026.

Track Choice Changes the Timeline

The GKS timeline is not the same for every applicant because Embassy Track and University Track work differently.

Question Embassy Track University Track
Where do you apply? Korean embassy in your country One Korean university directly
How many university choices? Up to three universities One university and one department
How many rounds? Three rounds Two rounds
2026 online application deadline September 30, 2025, 18:00 KST October 31, 2025, 18:00 KST
Final result timing Expected January 9, 2026 Mid-December 2025

You can only apply to one track and one program in the same year. Applying to more than one track, program, or university is not allowed.

Also remember this rule: Embassy Track applicants who pass the first round, including backup candidates, cannot apply again through University Track that year.

Start Preparing Before September

For the 2026 GKS-U timeline, the application opens in September. The practical planning window is July-August, before the September opening. This is important if your documents need apostille, consular confirmation, certified translation, or sealed recommendation letters.

Use this simple planning map:

Time What to prepare
July-August 2025 Start collecting school certificates, transcripts, citizenship proof, family relationship proof, passport documents, and recommendation materials.
Before September 15, 2025 Decide your track, program, and target universities. Check whether you need Embassy Track or University Track.
September 15-30, 2025 Submit Embassy Track if this is your chosen path. Do not wait until the last day.
October 17-31, 2025 If you fail Embassy Track first round and want to try University Track, move fast. The fallback window is short.
By December 31, 2025 Expected graduates who passed the first round must submit final graduation certificate and transcript.

Do not build your plan around the final deadline only. Build it around the first document you need to request.

Common Timeline Mistakes

Mistake 1: Thinking All Deadlines Are Local Time

The main GKS timeline uses KST. A deadline at 18:00 KST may be much earlier in your country.

Mistake 2: Checking Only One Notice

Check Study in Korea, your embassy notice, and your university notice if you apply through University Track.

Mistake 3: Preparing University Track Too Late

Embassy Track first-round results are scheduled for October 17, and University Track closes on October 31.

Mistake 4: Forgetting the Expected-Graduate Deadline

Expected graduates must prove final graduation by December 31, 2025 if they pass the first round.

Mistake 5: Waiting for Personal Contact

NIIED does not contact applicants individually for each round. Check official notices and My Page yourself.

Final Timeline Checklist

Before you submit, ask yourself:

Question Yes/No
Did I check the newest GKS notice on studyinkorea.go.kr?
Did I confirm that all times are KST?
Did I check my embassy or university first-round schedule?
Did I choose only one track and one program?
If I chose Embassy Track, did I prepare before the September 30 deadline?
If I want a fallback option, did I prepare University Track before October 17?
If I am an expected graduate, can I submit final graduation certificate and transcript by December 31, 2025?
Did I check My Page and official notices instead of waiting for an email?

Why We Are Strict About Dates

GKS is a yearly scholarship. If you miss one required step, you may not get a second chance in the same year. This is why the GKS timeline matters.

Start with the official year. Confirm the newest notice. Check your track. Convert KST. Prepare documents before the system opens. And if your academic calendar does not match the expected-graduate deadline, verify with official sources before you spend money on documents.

Official truth first. No commission. No visa sales. No shortcut promises.
