Who can apply

  • Foreign journalists who will be stationed (resident) in Korea to do news gathering and reporting.
  • Per the Enforcement Decree of the Immigration Act (attached Table 1-2, 별표1의2), this covers: (1) a person dispatched to Korea by a foreign newspaper, broadcaster, magazine or other foreign news organization to stay and carry out news coverage/reporting; and (2) a person who, under a contract with a foreign news organization, stays in Korea to carry out news coverage/reporting.
  • It also covers staff dispatched to work at a foreign media outlet’s Korean branch/office.
  • This is the long-term stationed version, distinct from C-1 (short-term temporary news coverage up to 90 days).

Documents you'll need

  • Visa application form
  • passport
  • one standard-size photo
  • document proving the assignment/employment such as a dispatch order (파견명령서) or certificate of employment (재직증명서) from the foreign news organization
  • for contract-based cases, the news-coverage contract with the foreign media outlet
  • for those posted to a foreign outlet’s Korean branch, the branch-office establishment permit / documents on the Korean branch (지사 설치 허가서 등)
  • tuberculosis test certificate may be required from designated countries. (Exact document set varies by mission and case — confirm the current checklist on hikorea.go.kr or with the receiving Korean embassy/consulate. unverified for a full itemized list.)

How to apply

  • Overseas embassy visa (사증).
  • Cases generally go through a Certificate of Visa Issuance (사증발급인정서) obtained by the Korean sponsor/branch first; but a correspondent dispatched from a media company that already has an established Korean branch may apply directly at a Korean mission without a Certificate of Visa Issuance.
  • A journalist dispatched from a media company that already has an established branch office in Korea may apply for the visa directly at a Korean mission without a Certificate of Confirmation of Visa Issuance (사증발급인정서).
  • In other cases a Certificate of Confirmation of Visa Issuance (issued via HiKorea by the Korean sponsor/branch) is generally obtained first, then the visa is issued overseas.
  • Foreign nationals staying 91+ days must complete foreigner (alien) registration at the immigration office within 90 days of entry.

Stay & extension

How long you can stay

Up to 2 years per grant (maximum period of stay under the Enforcement Rules of the Immigration Act attached Table 1, 출입국관리법 시행규칙 별표1). The initial overseas visa is often issued as a single-entry visa valid for entry within 3 months; the actual stay period is set on entry/registration and can be extended.

(Confirm current cap on hikorea.go.kr — unverified.)

Extending your stay

Extension of stay is granted while the correspondent remains assigned/contracted and continues legitimate news-coverage activity in Korea. Apply at the immigration office before the current stay expires, with updated proof of ongoing assignment or contract.

Standard extension application fee applies.

Working on this visa

Activity is limited to news coverage and reporting under the D-5 status (working as a stationed correspondent for the dispatching/contracting foreign media outlet). Work outside this scope generally requires separate permission for activities outside the status (체류자격 외 활동허가).

Requirements in detail

Korean language

No Korean-language requirement to obtain or hold D-5.

Sub-types

No numbered sub-codes; single status covering dispatched correspondents, contract-based correspondents, and staff posted to a foreign media outlet’s Korean branch. Distinct from C-1 (short-term temporary news coverage, up to 90 days).

Family

Spouse and minor children may accompany on F-3 (dependent family).

Mobile ARC

A mobile ARC (모바일 외국인등록증), introduced 2025, is available to registered ARC holders after completing foreigner registration.

2025–2026 policy updates

  • No specific 2025-2026 amendment to the D-5 (취재) status, its eligibility, or its 2-year stay cap was found in official sources during this research.
  • The status definition in the Enforcement Decree of the Immigration Act remains in force.
  • (Re-verify on hikorea.go.kr / immigration.go.kr / law.go.kr before relying on this.)

Common mistakes

  • Confusing D-5 (long-term stationed correspondent, up to 2 years) with C-1 (short-term temporary news coverage, up to 90 days).
  • Assuming a Certificate of Confirmation of Visa Issuance is always needed — correspondents from a company with an established Korean branch can apply directly.
  • Misreading the single-entry visa’s 3-month entry validity as the length of stay (stay is set separately and can reach 2 years).
  • Failing to complete foreigner registration within 90 days for stays over 90 days.

Where this leads

A correspondent who first enters on C-1 for temporary coverage and is then posted long-term can change status to / apply for D-5.
Direct D-5 issuance overseas is also available.
